15 Fully Funded Scholarships Most Nigerians Missed in 2026

Lesser-known fully funded scholarships open to Nigerians in 2026/2027. Deadlines, value, and how to apply for each.

Published 2026-04-17 · PBridge Editorial

Every Nigerian applicant has heard of Chevening and Fulbright. The other 40+ fully funded scholarships open to Nigerians get a fraction of the applications, which means your individual odds are multiples higher. This is a deliberately under-applied list. Most of these are government-funded, fully covered, and annual.

Why the 'popular' scholarships have the worst odds

Chevening gets ~3,000 Nigerian applications for ~60 awards. Türkiye Burslari gets roughly similar applications for ~500 awards. The acceptance rate at Stipendium Hungaricum for Nigerians is 10x Chevening's. The 'unknown' scholarships are unknown because Nigerian education blogs don't cover them — not because they're inaccessible.

Government scholarships with open Nigerian slots

Stipendium Hungaricum, Türkiye Burslari, Russian Government Scholarship, Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), Indonesian Government Scholarship (KNB), Thailand International Postgraduate Programme, Korean Government Scholarship (GKS), Japanese MEXT Scholarship, Mexican Government Scholarship. All fully funded, all accept Nigerians, most under-applied from Nigeria.

EU-wide programmes most Nigerians miss

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters covers tuition, living, and travel for programmes that span 2+ European countries. Hundreds of programmes, low name recognition in Nigeria, high acceptance rates. Eiffel Excellence from France pays €1,181-1,700/month for Masters or PhD. Orange Knowledge Programme from the Netherlands covers short courses and full Masters for professionals with 2+ years experience.

University-specific scholarships worth applying for

Clarendon Fund at Oxford awards 200+ scholarships annually across all subjects — no separate application, just apply to Oxford by the January deadline. Cambridge Trust awards 500+ per year at Cambridge. University of Manchester Global Futures gives £18,000 specifically to African students. University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, McGill, UBC, and University of Toronto all have substantial scholarship pools for international students.

Women-only and underrepresented-group scholarships

AAUW International Fellowship ($18K-30K for women), Mawazo PhD Scholars for African women, Ford Foundation Fellowship for diversity in US PhDs, HHMI Hanna Gray Fellows in life sciences. If you qualify for identity-specific scholarships, apply to them alongside general ones. They're additional opportunities, not replacements.

Industry and corporate scholarships

Google PhD Fellowship (CS), Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship, IEEE Fellowships (Engineering and CS). These pay at industry-level rates ($42K-$100K+) and come with mentorship and internship pathways. Apply if you're in the eligible fields.

How to apply to 10 scholarships in one application cycle

Build a single master document: CV, transcripts (officially translated), one well-written personal statement you'll adapt per application, three reference letters from professors, IELTS/TOEFL certificate. Save a copy for each application and tailor. The up-front work is 80% reused across applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many scholarships should I apply to?

+

6-10 is the sweet spot. Fewer than 6 leaves you too exposed to rejection variance. More than 10 reduces quality per application.

Can I accept multiple scholarships?

+

Usually no. You can only hold one scholarship at a time. Accept the one that best fits your career plan.

What happens if I'm accepted but my visa gets rejected?

+

Most scholarships defer one year. Apply promptly for deferment. Scholarship funds do not transfer without formal deferment.

Do scholarships cover family?

+

Chevening doesn't cover dependents. Commonwealth has a partial spouse allowance. Fulbright has limited dependent support. Check before applying if you have family.

Are there scholarships I can apply to without a Bachelor's degree yet?

+

Yes — many undergraduate scholarships (Stipendium Hungaricum, Türkiye Burslari, Russian Government) accept Nigerians applying with WAEC/NECO for Bachelor's programmes.
