How to Get Your WAEC/NECO Results Accepted Abroad
Step-by-step on authenticating, translating, and submitting WAEC and NECO results for international applications. Common rejections and fixes.
You applied to a university abroad. They asked for your WAEC or NECO results. You uploaded the scan. Months later, they rejected you for 'unverified secondary school credentials.' This happens to thousands of Nigerian applicants every year and is easily avoided.
The difference between WAEC/NECO result and verified result
Your WAEC/NECO result slip is a certificate. What universities abroad need is a verified result — one where the examining body confirms directly to the university that your result is authentic. The scan alone is not enough. You need to trigger online verification via WAEC or NECO's portal.
How to do WAEC online verification
Go to https://waecdirect.org. Buy a scratch card (roughly ₦4,000-₦5,000 as of 2026). Enter your examination number and the scratch card PIN. Print the online confirmation page. This is accepted by most universities as proof. Some universities require direct WAEC-to-university verification — for these, submit the universities' details via WAEC's verification portal.
How to do NECO verification
Similar process at https://results.neco.gov.ng. Buy the token, enter exam year and registration number, download the verified result. NECO has a separate University Verification service for direct-to-institution confirmation.
Translating results
For universities in non-English-speaking countries (Germany, France, Spain, etc.), your verified result must be officially translated by a certified translator recognised in the destination country. Nigerian translation agencies are often not accepted. Use an ISO-certified translation service in the destination country or a globally-recognised service like Cambridge Assessment.
When your result has errors
If your name is spelled differently on WAEC and your passport, or your birthdate is wrong, you must correct it with WAEC before submitting. This takes 6-8 weeks minimum. Do not submit a result that doesn't match your passport exactly — it will be flagged as fraud.
What to submit if WAEC doesn't have your result online
Older results (pre-2000) may not be on WAEC's online system. Visit WAEC's headquarters in Yaba or regional office. Request a Certified True Copy and a letter confirming your exam details. Universities will accept this with the original slip.
Country-specific acceptance
UK: WAEC Senior Secondary School Certificate is accepted as equivalent to A-Levels for many courses, but top universities require A-Level or IB. USA: AP courses or SATs may be required in addition to WAEC. Canada: WAEC accepted widely. Germany: requires university preparatory year (Studienkolleg) if your WAEC doesn't meet their direct university entry requirements.
