About Nigerian Immigration Service
The Nigeria Immigration Service is responsible for border control, passport administration, visa issuance, and residence permit management. NIS officers work at airports, seaports, land borders, and passport offices across all 36 states of Nigeria plus the FCT.
Recruitment into NIS is coordinated centrally by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), which also handles recruitment for NSCDC, Nigerian Correctional Service, and Federal Fire Service.
NIS careers offer international exposure, structured progression, pension under the paramilitary scheme, and official quarters for senior officers. The retirement age is 60 or 35 years in service, whichever comes first.
Available Positions & Ranks
NIS recruitment typically opens across three main categories:
Superintendent Cadre (Assistant Superintendent of Immigration - ASI II): For Bachelor's degree and HND holders. Entry-level officer rank with clear progression to higher ranks like Deputy Comptroller and Comptroller.
Inspectorate Cadre (Immigration Assistant I & II): For OND, NCE, and NABTEB holders. Operational role at border posts, passport offices, and administrative units.
Assistant Cadre (Immigration Assistant III): Entry-level paramilitary. Requires SSCE (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB) with 5 credits including English and Mathematics.
Specialised roles: Some recruitment cycles include openings for medical doctors, nurses, IT specialists, linguists (French, Arabic), and marine engineers under the Superintendent Cadre.
Eligibility Requirements
Nationality: Nigerian by birth only. Dual nationals are generally excluded from operational cadres.
Age: 18-30 for Assistant Cadre, 18-35 for Inspectorate and Superintendent Cadres.
Height: Males minimum 1.7m, females minimum 1.65m. Measured without footwear during physical screening.
Chest measurement: Minimum 86cm for males (fully expanded).
Medical: No history of sickle cell disease, epilepsy, or chronic illness. Pregnancy at screening time disqualifies female applicants for that cycle.
Criminal record: No convictions. Membership in any banned secret cult or organisation disqualifies immediately.
Character clearance: Letter from local government chairman or village head confirming good character. Required at screening stage.
How to Apply for NIS Recruitment 2026
Step 1: Confirm active recruitment. Visit cdcfib.career — the official recruitment portal for NIS, NSCDC, NCoS, and FFS. Only trust announcements from this portal and verified government social media handles.
Step 2: Prepare digital copies of all documents — NIN slip, birth certificate or age declaration, SSCE, higher qualification certificates (if any), NYSC certificate, passport photograph (white background), and local government certificate of origin.
Step 3: Visit cdcfib.career and select 'Nigerian Immigration Service' from the dropdown of available recruiting agencies.
Step 4: Create an account using an email you check daily. CDCFIB sends screening notifications strictly by email and SMS — missing them costs you the opportunity.
Step 5: Fill the application form. Pay close attention to state of origin, local government, and state of residence fields. Mismatch between these and your NIN records flags your application.
Step 6: Select your preferred cadre and up to three state of deployment choices in order of preference. NIS tries to honour top choices but final deployment is based on organisational need and federal character balancing.
Step 7: Upload documents in the required format (PDF for certificates, JPG for photo, each under 200KB).
Step 8: Submit and download your acknowledgement slip with QR code. Print two copies — one for your records, one to bring to physical screening.
Step 9: Begin physical preparation immediately. Running, push-ups, obstacle drills. CDCFIB physical screening is rigorous.
Physical Screening: What to Expect
Document verification: Bring original AND photocopies of every document uploaded. Missing originals mean instant disqualification regardless of your aptitude score.
Medical screening: Height and chest measurements, blood tests, HIV test, sickle cell genotype check, and eye test. Bring your results in PDF if tested recently at a reputable lab — it may be accepted.
Physical agility test: 2-3 km run (timed), push-ups, sit-ups, obstacle course. Those who fail any component are dismissed from further screening.
Aptitude test: Computer-based test covering English, Mathematics, Current Affairs, and General Knowledge. Practice WAEC and JAMB past questions — the standard is similar.
Oral interview: For shortlisted candidates who pass all above. Dress professionally, be honest, know why you want to work at NIS.
